Elder David A. Bednar gave a powerful talk on the law of chastity this past general conference. A professor by training and a teacher by heart, Elder Bednar teaches with great clarity and conviction. His most recent talk entitled We Believe in Being Chaste is no different. Certainly the Elder Bednar law of chastity talk will be a favorite in LDS stake standards nights and YSA firesides for decades to come. Certainly every member of the church (especially YM/YW/YSA) should study this talk carefully.
Elder Bednar’s law of chastity talk covered the following five main points.
Importance of a Physical Body in the Plan of Happiness
Elder Bednar states that “the eternal importance of chastity can only be understood within the overarching context of our Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness for His children.” As the spirit children of God, we come to earth to “obtain physical bodies, to gain mortal experience, and to progress toward exaltation.”
Elder Bednar further states that “our physical bodies make possible a breadth, a depth, and an intensity of experience that simply could not be obtained in our premortal existence.”
Power of Procreation
Elder Bednar states that “the means by which mortal life is created is divinely appointed.” Emphasizing the importance of both genders, Elder Bednar states that “the unique combination of spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional capacities of both males and females was needed to enact the plan of happiness. … The man and the woman are intended to learn from, strengthen, bless, and complete each other.” Elder Bednar concurs other LDS apostles that married life, not singlehood, is the ideal way to find lasting happiness and fulfillment in this life.
Standard of Sexual Morality
Here comes the sweet boldness by Elder Bednar regarding chastity and mortal virtue:
“[The Church] has a single, undeviating standard of sexual morality: intimate relations are proper only between a man and a woman in the marriage relationship prescribed in God’s plan. Such relations are not merely a curiosity to be explored, an appetite to be satisfied, or a type of recreation or entertainment to be pursued selfishly. They are not a conquest to be achieved or simply an act to be performed. Rather, they are in mortality one of the ultimate expressions of our divine nature and potential and a way of strengthening emotional and spiritual bonds between husband and wife.”
Blessings of Being Chaste
Elder Bednar promises great blessings for being chaste and virtuous. These promises include being “filled with love” (Alma 38:12) and having “the Holy Ghost [as our] constant companion” (D&C 121:46). Thus, “living the law of chastity invites some of the greatest blessings men and women can receive in mortality: appropriate spiritual confidence in the presence of family, friends, Church associates, and, ultimately, the Savior.”
Principle of Repentance
Elder Bednar compares violating the law chastity to developing a spiritual wound. The key to healing, therefore, is sincere repentance whereby we are cleansed through the atonement of Christ.
Elder Bednar concludes by promising that “obedience to the law of chastity will increase our happiness in mortality and make possible our progress in eternity.”
